Abstract This article introduces a significant novelty in Italian historiography. The author analyses, after a brief presentation of his life, the attitude of a Japanese scholar, Anesaku Masaharu, well-known in his country, towards the writings of some of the most important European modernists, some of them he met during his italian sojourn. The essay underlines Masaharu's extraordinary ability to capture and present, in writings and letters, some of the most significant features of the thought and the ecclesiastical choices of some of the greatest scholars of the early twentieth century in Europe.
