| Abstract | The present article analyses first the history of the concept of syncretism and the evolution of its various meanings. A theory of syncretism, or rather transculturation, is thereby proposed by placing particular emphasis on the socio-cultural conditions from which syncretic phenomena emerge. Building further on his perspective, the article introduces and investigates the cults of two Cuban 'Madonnas', which present both African and Latin-American features, as concrete examples of Christian-native syncretism. |
