Abstract In this paper I provide what I call a ?conceptual map? of the notion of ?religious freedom?, discussing the range of meanings and interpretations of the term. I identify three distinct models of this freedom. So doing, not only avoids some of the vagueness and ambiguity that is often characteristic of the term, but also permits one to appreciate what this freedom substantively requires of people, to respond to ?hard cases?, and to see how it can be understood and communicated across cultures. I also argue that religious freedom is a distinctive freedom, not reducible to ? and indeed unlike ? freedom of thought, conscience, opinion and expression.
