Abstract Vatican II was the most important ecclesiastical event in the twentieth century church. This year we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its inauguration. A thread can be traced throughout all its documents: the ancient and ever-new story of the Good Samaritan (Paul VI). From this passage taken from Luke a spirituality of compassion must unite all religions in a common project on behalf of the poor and the victims of our history. The Christian contribution to the future of Europe consists in helping believers from other religions feel at home among us. But the only foundation on which any communion with others can be built, no matter what religion they profess or even if they profess none, is in a shared search for truth. This shared truth will only be meaningful to the extent that it leads us to make specific choices, such as the creation of a world forum which revindicates justice for victims, peace for humanity and the integration of creation. That, it seem to me, would be the best route towards dialogue.
