Abstract | The article is an exploration of the relationship between mission and interculturality, on the assumption that these two fields of thought are linked and complementary. As a methodology for reflecting and acting in culturally and religiously pluralistic contexts, what is proposed is a 'theological intercultural hermeneutics' in three stages: allowing oneself to be inspired by the context and the symbolic universe of the other; revisiting one's own tradition in order to find novelties previously hidden; introduction of a new influx of life through renewed praxis. The author describes an application of this hermeneutic by looking at the symbolic universe of Octavio Paz,the Mexican writer and 1990 Nobel prize-wimmer. Starting with a study of the Gospel pericope of the meeting between Jesus and the Syro-pheonician woman (Mk 7:24-30), he sets out possible fundamental elements for intercultural mission, reflecting on the origin, the how, and the why of mission today. |
