Abstract | The author is the founder Director of the Loyola College-based Institute of Dialogue with Cultures and Religions (IDCR). In this article he reflects on the nature of the evolving social institution of caste in India and suggests ways in which the church, as well as other religions, can indirectly help to reform or abolish a reality that effectively blocks the way to a society of equals such as the kingdom of God demands and the democratic ideals of our times propose. Among other helps, encouraging inter-caste marriages is stressed. |
