Abstract About ten years ago a Spanish scholar in Asian history, Joseph Lluis Alay, Professor in the University of Barcelona, published a Catalan translation of the Latin Commentary on the Mongol Mission by a 16th century missionary invited to the Court of Akbar in India. This account is considered a first-hand historical source about the times and the extraordinary figure of Akbar, about which we have numerous writings from Muslim sources. Just a hundred years ago a keen student of Christianity in India, Fr Henry Hosten, S.J., was shown the Latin text of the commentary which Monserrat wrote about his journey to Agra, his life in Akbar's court, his experiences when we accompanied Akbar in a military expedition to Aghanistan, and his return to Delhi and Goa. This account is full of geografical, cultural, historical and human information about 16th century India from a humble Jesuit who had a keen sense of observation and recorded his impressions and ideas. The title of this article is inspired with thanks by the fine book of Prof.Alay. In this presentation the author would like to honour the memory of Frs Monserrat and Hosten, and the work of Prof.Alay, all of whom contributed much to our knowledge of India.
