Abstract | Dr Heredia is a well-known social scientist and educationist, former Rector of St Xavier's College, Mumbai. After retirement he lectures in many institutions in the country and abroad, and is socially committed writer. One may read his latest book, allied to the theme of this article, Taking sides: Reservations Quotas and Minority Rights in India, published by Penguin in 2012. In this article he reflects on the history of education in our country and on the urgent need for Christian institutions to recover the creativity shown in the early days of colonialism, with models largely outmoded by now, and to attempt new models that take into consideration the anomies of the present situation. This paper is based on concluding reflections made at a conference on Christian Education and the Making of Modern India, organised by the IIAS, Shimla and Don Bosco University, 27-30 April 2011. It draws on his earlier work. |
