Abstract The human right of religious freedom is often challenged - on the one hand by religious conservatives who would like to use religion to homogenize society, on the other hand by liberal secularists who would like to see religion as a merely private affair. Freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief does not privilege religious persons nor does it stand in conflict with other human right like freedom of speech. A state's secularity points to the principle of non-identification with any religion, but it does not mean that the state should promote a secular worldview. Freedom of religion should be defended against those who would like to have a religion privileged by the state and against those would like to dispel religion from the public sphere.
