Abstract In the rich, age-old history of Japan there is a ritual, known in the West as the Tea Ceremony, that has become the symbol and the synthesis of the spiritual longings of the Japanese heart. it is a ritual that brings together art, contemplation and communion. The spirituality of the Tea Ceremony is called Wabi, which is a way of conceiving life, of relating to the Absolute and to the community. Christian Liturgy can take from the Tea Ceremony not just the external forms (objects, clothing, structures), and not even the simple body positions and gestures, but, first of all, those interior attitudes that charge the Rite with power: reverence of every tiny gesture that makes up the Rite, faithfulness to the Tradition that passes it down, the spiritual intensity in preparing it and carrying it out, the maximum attention to seeing that nothing disturbs the heart and the mind of the participants. on the part of Christian ministers, the constant study of liturgical rites and close attention to their celebration have proved to be extraordinarily effective for mission in Japan.
