Abstract The episode of Cornelius in the Acts of the Apostles marks a decisive turning-point in the opening out of the Church towards pagans. Here it is used as a paradigm of the transformation that missionary experience, guided by the Spirit, can bring to the mentality and attitudes of the one who is sent. Making a rapid exegesis of Acts 10:1-11:18, the Author deduces from it that it is precisely the overcoming of barriers and resistance thrown up by prejudice, which prevent a positive view of someone who is different in culture and religion, that can provide a starting point for a new awareness of mission and a renewal of theological reflection. Every effort to take the Gospel authentically and creatively beyond habitual confines, can give rise to experiences that generate conflict situations within the Church. But it is precisely in the wise overcoming of such situations that the Church and her mission are enriched throughout history.
