| Abstract | The statements of the Magisterium regarding popular religious expression have continued to develop, above all, around the question of the relationship with Liturgy. However, after the Second Vatican Council, evangelisation has become a means of access to the topic. It is precisely from this angle that the article analyses the principal documents of the Magisterium on popular religious expression, demonstrating that it can be considered as both the object and the subject of evangelisation. The esteem in which it is held ? and which in recent years has led the Magisterium to point it out as the preferential point for inculturation ? can be explained also through the historical process that, in the course of centuries, had modelled the present features of popular religious expression, a process in which ecclesiastical authorities have had an active role. There is a need for a formative activity by which the Magisterium can remind pastors that popular religious expression must be purified and raised up in the areas that are still incomplete; and it must also make them aware of their role. |
