| Abstract | To evaluate the progress made by African Catholicism in the matter of acquisition of the values of tradition and of traditional African religion means, to some extent, to draw up a balance of the process of inculturation undertaken a good number of years ago by the Churches in Africa. But this evaluation presupposes a reflection on the worth of the process itself. In fact, it is a case of proposing a hermeneutics and an epistemology that need to be revised in the face of the new situations and sharp challenges that Christian Africa is experiencing today. That is what this article proposes to do, with a commitment to recognize the efforts made by the Church up to the present, efforts that must remain vigilant if they are not to prove vain in a context of in-depth evangelization of Africa. It is for this reason that, in the present context of an Africa that is prey to various kinds of socio-political laceration, the option for the poor, which takes up fully the dynamic of inculturation, becomes a route that is both pertinent and rich in hope. |
