| Abstract | The article reflects on the constant debate between laicism and religious freedom. To understand this debate, the article shows a historical outlook referring specially to the modern comprehension of the neutrality of the State, the tolerance and the freedom of the conscience. The conclusions underline the constitutive meaning of this freedom in order to understand the relationship between political power and morality and the consolidation of its statement in a particular historical experience, marked by the Christian tradition. |
