Abstract The current convulsive international situation has displaced the dramatic problems of Africa to a secondary place where underdevelopment daily reaps victims because of hunger and illness. We may ask ourselves whether, in this condition, religions are consolatory or if they offer stimulus for development. In this contribution the author asks if, among the major obstacles, the present divisions within the two most diffused religions, Islam and Christianity, each with about 300 million faithful are to be placed. Among the indications proposed, in Africa, 'inculturation' is spoken of as giving value to the concepts of 'the great family' of 'reconciliation' through communication ('palabre') and the major themes to be affronted such as peace, economic and ecological relations, AIDS, education for honesty and the formation of enterpreneurship.
