Abstract In the Judeo-Christian tradition water is linked to particular moments in the history of salvation. Instead, in different peoples, it is a symbol of 'generation' and 'distribution' and it becomes part of religious rituals as an element of 'purification' and 'regeneration'. In this work the author also presents Raimundo Panikkar's attempt to theologically read Christian history in reference to the three great rivers: the Jordan, Tiber and Ganges. Maintaining symbolic language, he concludes with some hermeneutical considerations present in humanity, an universalization of the history of salvation and an instrument of interreligious dialogue.
