Abstract The founder director of the Social Science Centre, St Xavier's College, Mumbai, offers a reflection on the roots and causes religious fundamentalism based on a talk given by at St Pius College, Mumbai, on 17th October 2002. He analyses the various types of fundamentalism and thinks that they generally overlook the context that accompanies and makes intelligible all texts, the context of all formulations and the context of the people to whom they are addressed. Fundamentalists argue logically from their premises but refuse to examine their presuppositions. They lack a proper appreciation of the relation between faith and reason, between experience and expression, between the charismatic and the institutionalised aspects of religion. They are defensive, authoritarian and generally conservative in politics. At the end he suggests some ways of dealing with fundamentalism.
