Abstract By kind permission of The Near East School of Theology we reproduce below the text of the Public Lecture delivered by the author at the N.E.S.T. on November 21, 2002, and first published in their Theological Review XXIV/1, pp.3-18. Dr Ray Mouawad holds a Ph.D. in Eastern Church History, and is a lecturer in History and Religious Studies at the University of St Joseph, Beirut (Lebanon). He presents us with some examples of 'double belonging' against the background of the Muslim category of taqqiyah or 'dispensation under constraint'. These are cases of simulation or dissimulation due to external pressures. At present theologians speak more of 'double belonging' as a result of a personal discovery of the wealth and values of other religions besides one's own.
