Abstract | By virtue of its covenantal relationship with Yahweh, Israel became ?a priestly kingdom and a holy nation? (Ex 19:6). The whole congregation of the people of Israel was called to be holy (Lev 19:2). But the Biblical narratives also tell us that there were priests in Israel and that the priesthood played a vital role in the social, political and religious life of Israel. This article attempts to see the complexity of the Israelite Priesthood through the centuries. Hence it has a limited scope of addressing issues like the significance of the Israelite priesthood, its origin, rise and fall and its varied functions at different epochs in history and the priestly claims of the tribe of Levi. |
