Abstract This article exposes the first results of an ethnographic research in the Gitananda asram of Altare (Savona), a Hindu ascetic community in Northern Italy. My main research interrogatives concern the organizative declination of an oriental ascetic tradition when is moved to a western context as well as Italy and the dynamic between conservation and innovation that characterizes the process. In the first part the author describes the different levels of the construction of Gitananda asram reality ? ascetic community, temple and cultural-politic profile. Then, he analyzes person conceptions in Hindu ascetics, like samnyasin figure, emphasizing his elements of flexibility. Using as analytical outline the social and cultural construction of time in the asram, he continues illustrating the differences between Indian and Italian rhythms and the mediations and influences between each other. He concludes using the Hindu notion of dharma, the social rule, to explain the sense of the variations and the particularities of the construction of an asram in a non-Indian context.
