| Abstract | Relations between religions were often marked by contempt, hostility and even violence. More positive attitudes, however, may have their pitfalls. When Christians, for instance, take to Buddhist forms of meditation, borrow Hindu symbols or use Muslim mystical texts, their openness may be perceived as a secret will to power or a new form of cultural imperialism. Between ?cannibalistic? annexation which ignores otherness and excessive discretion which keeps believers in isolation and ignorance, the heirs of the various spiritual traditions need to search together for the conditions and criteria of a genuine mutual recognition. |
