Abstract The underlying assumption of interfaith dialogue is the recognition of other religions and their believers, even in case of differences in substance. But where are the ethical limits of this recognitions? Is it possible to find ethical criteria for recognition of partners in dialogue without offending the other? The Second Vatican Council gives some hints for such criteria in its documents Nostra Aetate and Dignitatis humanae. The "dignity of the person" is at the centre of these criteria for a recognition of the other as partner in dialogue which demands not only respect for him but also allows for a critique of his belief system.
