Abstract The recent academic discussion about religious pluralism has often looked up to Hinduism as something of an ideal: a religious tradition that allows for a plurality of forms, approaches and perspectives. While India's overall religious history is one of a remarkably peaceful coexistence between different faiths, the ascprition of a religiously pluralistic view to Hinduism ? religious pluralism as it is understood today ? is however rather uncritical. As a matter of facet, a closer of examination of Hindu religious documents reveals that there are more than one Hindu attitude towards other religions, ranging from exclusivism to pluralism. What one comes across in the traditional theological treaties of Hinduism is often an exclusive claim to truth, and a readiness to ignore rather than confront the rival truth-claims of other religions. It is only from the time of Neo-Hinduism that there is any explicit recognition of, and discussion about, other religions among Hindu writers. And the perspective of this writers, who belong mainly to neo-vedantic trend, can be broadly termed as inclusivistic. Mahatma Gandhi stands out as one of the few Hindu thinkers of modern times who has expressed in his writings an unambiguously pluralistic view of religions.
