Abstract The first chapter of the article deals with the Christian attitude towards Islam in the Middle Ages and today. Medieval theology classifies Islam especially under the categories: Christian heresy ? pagan religion ? tool of the devil. The contemporary attitude towards Islam in catholic theology is determined by the declaration ?Nostra aetate? (art.3) of the Second Vatican Council. The second section discusses the problem how Christians should judge the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Christian theology should recognize the political and religious charisma of Muhammad, but he can't be accepted as prophet in a Christian understanding. The third chapter is concerned with the problem of Christian-Islamic dialogue, which is often burdened by unrealistic expecta-tions.
