Abstract Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) was an ?advocate of toleration? between the seventeenth century and the Enlightenment. He took position against Protestant and Catholic intolerance, particularly in his Commentaire philosophique. He was convinced that tolerance was a great and necessary Christian moral virtue. One of his most powerful motivations was the certainty that persecution was absolutely contrary to the spirit and teaching of Christ. Some of his central arguments were directed against the irrationality of religion persecution, through reasons to defend the conscience of every man (primacy of ethics) and epistemological considerations, connected with the difficulty of discerning religious truth. Bayle?s discussion of the erring conscience placed the basis for toleration, founded on the conscience, and for pluralism on epistemological grounds.
