Abstract In June 2002, in a world lacerated by the wounds of international terrorism, Chiara Lubich proposes a reflection on fraternity and peace in view of unity between peoples. Only on the basis of the idea of a human family, as it is invoked by Jesus in the Gospel of John (17,21), it is possible to draw human history beyond its fears. Unity is a sign of the times, signalled by a multiplicity of social and cultural phenomena. The challenge of globalisation calls on us to deepen the theme of unity. The Focolare Movement ? given its spread throughout the world, its inclusion of persons of different social extractions and differing religious vocations, and its openness to dialogue with other churches, other faiths and various cultures ? can indicate today, as in 2002, the path of fraternity in politics.
