Abstract | Inculturation cannot be limited to worhip alone: it must regard all aspects of cultural and social life. This fact calls to inquire on an inculturation that goes beyond the liturgical adaptations, all the way to the acceptation of an Indian worldview. After having remembered the origins of the Church in India with Thomas the Apostle, and having underlined that the ?romanization? began only in the XVII century with the arrival of Portuguese missionaries, the Author celebrates the ?pioneers of inculturation?, from De Nobili (1577-1656) up to the present day (Brahmabandhab Upadhyaya, Sadhu Sunder Singh, Monchanin, Griffiths, Le Saux, Amalorpavadass, etc.). In the post-council period, inculturation was remarkable and many thought that the objective was met, since an Indian atmosphere was introduced in worship, but the Author strongly underlines that ?this process is a long one, and it becomes longer when the period of alienation has been a long one. The Gospel fails to challenge the culture unless it becomes part of it?. Then, the Author examines the ?elements of an Indian worldview? to conclude that ? their acceptation in workship shows their nobility, so that they can be presented to God as a cultural fruit from India?. |
