Abstract Does Christianity have an original position in politics? This is the question that will guide this reflection. From the documents Gaudium et Spes and Dignitatis Humanae there is an implicit connection between Christianity and politics. The New Testament also provides various possibilities for this relationship. In the first part of the article, in broad outlines, we will provide an historical overview of the relationship, from the earliest Christian community, and then following the transition from the Christendom to the modern era, arriving then at the Second Vatican Council. A new way to understand the autonomy, both in Christianity and in politics, suggests an effort to recover the distinction between the formal plane and the substantial plane in the relationship between them both.
