Abstract The article moves from the global consciousness and the convergent movement, shaping the so-called ?Second Axial Age?, as background to articulate the path followed by the Catholic Church in relation to Islam, with special reference to the interventions of the latest Popes. Far from flattening out differences, the progressive dialogical encounter seems to pave the way for an epoch of mutual understanding and common action, despite incomprehension and difficulties. The dialogical effort made during Vatican II and later by Pope?s discourses have found further echo in the document titled: A Common Word Between Us and You, addressed by 138 Islamic scholars to Benedict XVI, and in the five pillars of understanding around which the Christian-Muslim dialogue can blossom over the next years.
