Abstract The problem of Christology is central in the present-day debate on the theology of religions. Is it possible to affirm the uniqueness and the universality of Christ as saviour and leave room for a genuine religious pluralism and the recognition of the efficacy of other salvific "ways" and "figures"? Beyond an ambiguous religious relativism and a rigid and intransigent exclusivism the a. affirms that the uniqueness and the universality of Christ has a twofold character. It is constitutive in the sense that Christ, above all in virtue of the paschal event, is the efficacious and universal cause of salvation. It is relational in the sense that, within the complex design of universal salvation which God brings to completion by means of diverse "figures", the Christ-event constitutes the unique 'human face' in which God has completely revealed himself.
