Abstract One of the main specific tasks of the Theological Faculty of the Pontifical Urbanian University is attentively to search for the traces of an evangelical preparation in the peoples' cultures and religions and to propose a method capable of gathering the valuable seeds scattered there and integrating them into the revealed truth : an ambitious but difficult task, in which the study of Scripture can and must fulfil an irreplaceable function. The Bible was able to appropriate the positive aspects of the surrounding world (Canaanite, Phoenician, Mesopotamian, Persian, Hellenistic) without diminishing their original matrix, in fact conferring them the dignity of divine revelation. Even the personality of the O.T. God is constituted of elements borrowed from the surrounding world, but re-thought and integrated into the revealed patrimony of God's Word. The paradigm obtained from the study of the biblical texts can also be useful in letting the Gospel become incarnate into the diverse cultures of our contemporary world. The magisterium of the Church, especially through the documents of the II Vatican Council, encourages us to pursue the path of inculturation, whose parameters are already active in the O.T.
