Abstract For centuries, the official teaching of the Catholic Church has addressed the deeper meaning of salvation and has explored questions pertaining to the salvation of Christians and those outside the Church. Similarly, in recent years, Muslim scholars have devoted considerable attention to the question of the salvation of Muslims and Non-Muslims. Magisterial teaching and some branches of Islam have moved away from exclusivistic views, allowing for the salvation of others. There is a detectable shift away from expressing the concept of salvation as rescue from the fires of hell, toward an understanding of salvation as participation in the divine life. A fear-based theology has been replaced with a love or hope based theology of the whole person, acknowledging the worldly and otherworldly qualities of salvation.
