Abstract The pluralistic process at work in modern society is forcing schools to redefine their institutional status and rethink the nature and purpose of their contribution to human education. This process also involves religion and its type of presence in society and at school. Religious instruction is encouraged to pursue a model of its own, in line with the nature and aims of schooling. After claiming that school education arises from objective mediation between subjects, the article outlines a reference discipline and applies its structural features to religious teaching. The a. argues that the phenomenological-hermeneutic model, whose connections are defined, is the most suitable to ?explain? and ?understand? religion at school.
