Abstract The article opens with an analysis of how the German Federal Republic has gradually evolved into a ? multicultural society? as a result of migration, with special attention to the ensuing reaction in the schools of Rhineland Palatinate. The a. then discusses the issue of bilingualism: a resource which, despite its importance in intercultural education, is often neglected and underestimated in the case of children from immigrant families. Finally the article suggests various theses on the roles that parents and may play within intercultural education programmes.
