Abstract By revealing the “meaning” of human life, the Coran also opens the path to not losing oneself in what is not salutary. Hence it is the path of God which is revealed. This dependence is so great that one cannot be saved unless one acts in conformity with the divine project, which implies obedience to the Law of God, the “Sharî'a”. Disobeying this law means eroding one's humanity. Submitting to the Law means being fully human. This fact is of enormous consequence in the relation between Christianity and Islam. Christianity concentrates on recognizing in Jesus Christ the revelation of God and of His love of humankind, whence Christianity's dogmatic christological reflexion, whereas at the heart of Muslim theological reflexion we find the Sharî'a. Christian hermeneutics concerns firstly Christian “dogma”, whereas contemporary Islamic hermeneutics is concerned with the “maqâsid al-Sharî'a”, the objectives of the Law. What are the consequences of these fundamental differences for a dialogue in the framework of a shared history?
