Abstract This contribution concerns the question of religious freedom. Though it finds its roots in the context of the theological reflection dating back to the XVI century and coming from a critical acceptance of the Protestant Reform, the question of religious freedom finds its origin in the relation between truth and freedom which characterizes the Christian faith. Since then authors like Hans Franck and S?bastien Castellion have enhanced the centrality of conscience and have affirmed the predominance of personal faith on the ecclesiastical one. Thus they relativise the historical forms of the latter?s expressions. Contemporary theology is called to face the questions raised by this reflection and taken into consideration, from a philosophical point of view, by the liberal religious thought.
