| Abstract | This contribution examines a few theological questions, in particular the relationship between freedom and truth in the act of faith. In this suffered document the concept of religious freedom is freed from the abstract contraposition truth-freedom and it is rather connected to human dignity and to the primacy of a subjective access to truth. The Catholic Magisterium has thus reformulated the classical doctrine concerning truth and freedom of faith giving more importance to conscience. This re-formulation is due to a changed historical context ? it no longer refers to the Illuministic conception of either Relativism or Jacobean freedom but to the contemporary context of the negation of human rights. This re-formulation is due also to the opening of the Catholic Church to other confessions and to the world; moreover it comes from a revision of the notion of Revelation and faith as it was affirmed in the Dei Verbum. |
