Abstract The expression ?ethos of dialogue?, understood as objective genitive, refers to certain attitudes and ethical reasons according to which a true discourse can be carried out between two or more persons. The same expression, taken as subjective genitive, indicates the dialogue as a reality capable of founding an ethos. In this case, however, the ?dialogue? is taken in its broader sense, that is, as a fundamental mode of human existence. In light of the philosophical thought of Martin Buber, who understands dialogue mainly in this broader sense, two essential elements of the ethos are presented and interpreted, namely responsibility and moral values. While highlighting the enduring riches of the work of a thinker who died fifty years ago, the article shows the complementary nature of both the meanings of ?ethos of dialogue? and their theoretical and practical relevance to an authentic human life.
