Abstract Having specified what is meant by ?Moslem countries? and ?Christian presences?, the article tries to describe the conditions of ?living side by side? in various contexts around the world. Besides the distinction between Arab Moslem countries and non-Arab Moslem countries, the situation of Christian communities depends on how expressly and how rigidly Islamic Law (Shar?'a) has been adopted. Those who belong to other religions, in particular Christians and Hebrews, are almost always stuck in the framework of the classical ?dhimma?, even if it is expressed in modern juridical language. The awakening of Islam on a global level and the rise of religious fanaticisms and political extremisms have made peaceful co-existence increasingly difficult, with a lack of respect for the rights of minorities, even in areas where greater tolerance levels have been reached (in the Maghreb countries, sub-Saharan Africa, Indonesia, etc.) or where a Lay State has been proclaimed (Lebanon, Turkey). The areas explored more in depth by the article are those of civil rights, religious freedom, family rights and education.
