Abstract The a. studies the views about Jesus reflected by some pluralist theologians who have followed the lines of the rationalist quest for the historical Jesus, characterised by sceptical rather than critical presuppositions. Unclear about the role of faith in historical research they easily discount the resurrection of Jesus as just the Apostles? conviction that he was alive with God. Their views are often based on a dichotomy between historical truth about Jesus and the existential affirmation about the meaning of his life couched in mythical language. The theological affirmations about Jesus are placed in the context of apparently equal or similar affirmations made about other figures. In his critique the a. suggests that the historical and the theological must not be placed in opposition but be seen to include one another and that the NT language could not express Jesus? identity in any available categories.
