Abstract In this essay first written for the Gibellini Felicitation Volume the a. starts by describing the joyous and humorous atmosphere around the Sri Lanka popular Buddhist healing ceremony called Daha-ata-sanniya, and shows how it centres on the naming, exposing and dismissing the real evil, in the form of a human agency, hiding behind the mask. On this bases he reflects on humour as an element of prophetic religion, also in Christianity, and a sign of eschatological hope.
