Abstract The Italian Franciscan Carlo Orazi da Castorano (1673-1755) stayed in China as a missionary beginning in 1700. There he joined Fr. Bernardino della Chiesa OFM (1644-1721), the bishop of Peking, in Linqing/Shandong. Soon both became involved in the Chinese Rites Controversy which had been launched anew with tha 1693 Mandate of the Vicar Apostolic of Fujian, Charles Maigrot. This caused the legation to China of the papal delegate Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon. When tha Kangxi emperor noticed that Maigrot and Tournon held the non-compatibility of Confucianism and Christianity, he exiled them and demanded a piao ("residence permit") from all missionaries whereby they would promise to follow the adaptation of Matteo Ricci SJ (1552-1610). Carlo Orazi took it, but later changed his attitude towards tha Rites and struggled hard with the Jesuit Visitor, Kilian Stumpf (1655-1720), who defended the Jesuits' attitude.
