| Abstract | The "mosque war" that opposes a municipal administration determined to close down a place of islamic worship in its territory - to a muslim community in Italian North East, shows local Islam's rifts. The event, first at national level and then international, highlights the different strategies of the socio-religious actors involved in the struggle for the monopoly of public representation: from the "Islam of the States" to the neotraditionalist communitarist Islam. In the background, the silence of the sufi confraternities -with a massive presence in the territory, but absent in the mobilization in defence of the mosque -and the struggle against them led by the islamic groups. These are today involved in the social building of a new ideological community, meaning the cancellation of all cultural and religious differences, seen as a threat to umma's cohesion. |
