Abstract In traditional Islamic cultures, women?s bodies are veiled, their place is in the homes and their voices are hardly heard. Women and sport appear to be a contradiction in terms. The strong bodies and the public appearance of scarcely clad female athletes seem to be incompatible with traditional Islamic notions of femininity. Available information and everyday experiences support the impression that Muslim women do not participate in sport and games. In elite sport women from Islamic countries are a small, nearly invisible minority, and migrant women are not very much engaged in the sport for all movement in Western countries. However, the absence of Muslim women from the sporting fields is not a matter of concern and/or discussion. In Western countries, the role of Muslim women in sport and society is explained with their religion and with the restrictions which Islam imposes on women. However, there are numerous Muslim women who consider their religion as source of strength and empowerment. In this article, the a. will explore the contested and ambivalent relations between women, sport, religion and culture. However, it is important to have in mind, that lives and roles of women (and men) differ decisively dependent on the country, but also on other variables such as social class, religious orientation, place of residence (city or country side), etc.
