Abstract The challenge of Europe is to build a culture of citizenship that reflects itself in the modern state as a non-denominational, non-partisan guarantee of religious freedom. This means an end to blind acceptance of the monopolies of different religious beliefs, particularly the religious culture and morals of Catholicism that, in an ambiguous manner, seems to expect to represent the sum total of the values of a Europe that, in the meantime, has discovered a pluralistic vocation. Only a clear intercultural educational project in which the many different European cultures can grow together, meeting democratically, each maintaining its own identity, will permit Europe to build a future in democracy.
