Abstract The battle of Karbal?, which brought about the birth of Shiite Islam, has been one of the most widely-known epic stories in the countries of the Middle East since the tenth century B.C. The a. of the essay approaches the story through the poetic version by Naim Frash?ri (1846-1900), possibly the best-loved Albanian poet and representative of Bektashism. His works are alive with both that past which holds the roots of an intensely-lived faith, and the turbulent present of the poet and his nation as it prepares itself for liberation from Turkish dominion. The motif which holds so many centuries of history and such different cultural approaches together is the religious fact itself, which in the story of Karbal? constitutes both the basis and the recapitulation of universal history.
