| Abstract | The use of Weberian sociology for the study of development in Asia has been marred by problematic applications of Weber?s Protestant ethic thesis to Asian societies. These problems include the erroneous attribution of Orientalist tendencies to Weber?s sociology of religion, the confusion between Weber?s thesis on the Protestant ethic and his general sociology of religion, and the auto-Orientalism of the works that attempt to identify functional equivalents to the Protestant ethic in Asian religions. It is argued that a more balanced and sophisticated reading of Weber would allow for a more positive appropriation of Weber?s sociology for the study of development in Asia. |
