Abstract This paper is devoted to a balance. Some years ago the A. suggested to consider the contemporary Italian religious situation as a puzzle within the competition between ?old? and ?new? paradigm. In that occasion was advanced a solution of that puzzle by taking into account an internal competition; in other words, a competition between Catholic religious firms within an only apparent Catholic religious monopoly. Since then, it has been possible to collect much more evidence of this internal religious competitions. The key of this solution of the puzzle involves the adoption of both the luhmannian concept of societal functional differentiation (?secularization? from the religious point of view) and the luhmannian concept of organization (and therefore of the idea of Church as a non-entirely organized social phenomenon). Recent researches offer at least two new opportunities of development: a theoretical reformulation of the secularization concept in order to distinguish between two different dimensions of this process, and a closer connection with the sociological and historical efforts to historicize the concept of secularization.
