Abstract Giorgio La Pira had a great interest for Holy Places of Near East. His vision about this theme was very original. Particularly important is the role that he set aside at Damietta, the city in which Francis of Assisi met the sultan Malik al Kamil. For La Pira this Egyptian city becomes the symbol of reconciled encounter between Israel and Ishmael (progenitor od Arabs). For the humankind the foundation of reconciliation remains anyhow Jesus Christ's cross. La Pira suggests a theological and teleological vision of the history. Man is called to cooperate with a design drawn by God. Into this historical itinerary some cities unroll a particular task. Especially Jerusalem and Florence have a fundamental role: on the contrary there is not a particular emphasis on Rome. In the paper these themes are exemplified also throughout the comparison between the positions of La Pira and some verses written by two Florentine poets: the great Dante Alighieri and the contemporary Mario Luzi.
