Abstract | Writing the music for a psalm requires respecting its nature as an inspired text. This respect is anything but a limitation. Nyman's Miserere is an anguished cry, with no place for hope. This is shown by the harmony, the rhythm, the chosen intervals and a significant and unnecessary change in the original text. It is an opaque symbol, and therefore, misleading. P?rt's Miserere, however, seems to want to participate in the iconic claim to refer beyond, to refer upwards. In any case, it still leaves room for questions regarding the need for purification in the musical language used and in the listener. |
